Cricket: Afghanistan V Pakistan in Abbottabad
Karachi: Afghanistan will play three one-day matches against Pakistan 'A' side later this month, including a game at Abbottabad where US Special Forces last week killed world's most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden.
Afghanistan will become the first international side to tour Pakistan in more than two years after international cricket suspended in the country over security fears since terror attack on Sri Lankan team bus in March 2009. The attacks, which killed eight people and wounded seven Sri Lankan players and their assistant coach, prompted the ICC to strip Pakistan of its share of matches for the 2011 World Cup.
"A meeting between PCB and Afghanistan Cricket Board was held on May 4, 2011 at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore under the chair of Amir Nawab, member Board of Governors PCB and Coordinator for Afghan Cricket. It was decided in the meeting that Afghanistan National Team will tour Pakistan for a series of three one day matches against Pakistan 'A' Team," a PCB statement said today.
The Afghan team will arrive on May 24 before playing matches in Faisalabad the following day, Rawalpindi on May 27 and Abbottabad on May 29. "Pakistan Cricket Board has also decided to facilitate ACB for training of their staff in various cricket relating fields. For that a 10 member contingent of ACB will travel to Lahore in near future," the statement said.
Afghanistan qualified for the World Twenty20 in the West Indies last year and the same year won the Inter-Continental Cup, meant for Associated countries of the International Cricket Council. The Afghan team is coached by former Pakistan wicket-keeper and ex-captain Rashid Latif.
