Messi, the 'Messiah'

"I am a 35-year-old graphic designer with around 13 years' industry experience", Debenham told us. "I work for a design agency in north London on a wide variety of briefs and in my spare time I work on my sports-related projects, which include the 'Heroes' Series. Producing the artwork has allowed me to combine my two passions of sport and creativity".

Sneijder, the 'Sniper'

"I gave the series the title 'Heroes' because the players featured have provided some of the most iconic and enduring moments within the game. A lot of the designs feature the so-called 'world stars' of the game mainly because their achievements are the the most significant. Others are a little more selective and concentrate on cult players or the ones club supporters have taken to their hearts".

Ronaldo, the 'Phenomenon'

"I think to date I have completed around 25 to 30 illustrations, and I also have a similar number in progress. Sometimes I find it easiest to work on multiple designs at any one time because trying to resolve one to a conclusion can lead to a creative block and plenty of headaches! Among my work-in-progress pieces are Archie Gemmill (1978 v Holland), Yordan Letchkov (1994 v Germany) and following his heroics in the 2014 World Cup, Colombia's James Rodriquez".

Iniesta

"The main objective of the work is to celebrate not only the player but a specific moment that defined their career. I would like to think that the illustrations evoke memories, which take the viewer back to a moment in time. Visual references work best in achieving this, such as the stance or pose of the player, the individual's characteristics or in particular the colours or graphic elements used within the team's kit (VanBasten 88 is a good example of this)".

David Beckham

"My favourite footballers growing up in the domestic [British] game were Mark Hughes and Alan Shearer - strong forwards and spectacular goalscorers. On the international front, Roberto Baggio was always a strong favourite as was Ronaldo of Brazil. In the modern game it is hard to look beyond Lionel Messi".

Zinedine Zidane

"The World Cup has been fantastic. It's had excitement, upsets and the emergence of new talent. To experience it first hand in Brazil has been a great privilege and I'll treasure the memories for a long time".
