Geoff Marsh top-scored with 110 to help his side finish with a total of 270/6. Debutant Navjot Singh Sidhu (73) and Krishnamachari Srikkanth (70) had everything in control, but once the former was dismissed by Craig McDermott, Australia opened the sluice gates. Maninder Singh did well to score four runs in the final over, but was bowled off the penultimate ball ball by Steve Waugh. This happened a year after the tied test between the two nations at the same venue where Maninder Singh was incidentally the protagonist.
