Michael Vaughan 'handled the ball'
Occasion: 2nd test, Bangalore, bilateral series, 2001
What actually happened? Having weathered the early storm, Michael Vaughan was eyeing a test hundred when on 64, he pushed at a ball bowled by Sarandeep Singh and even before the ball became 'dead', he pushed it away with hand. As the trajectory of the ball would have taken it towards stumps, the Indian fielders appealed and the umpire didn't have any hesitation in giving it out. Vaughan thus became only the second English player after Graham Gooch to be given out handled the ball. Law 33 of the 'Laws of Cricket' provides that, "Either batsman is out Handled the ball if he wilfully touches the ball while in play with a hand or hands not holding the bat unless he does so with the consent of the opposing side."
Was he given out? Yes.
