Federer loses to Berdych in quarterfinals
New York: Five-time champion Roger Federer was knocked out of the U.S. Open by Tomas Berdych on Wednesday, with the Czech completing a 7-6 (1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

It is the first time since 2003 that Federer had not reached the semifinals at Flushing Meadows.
Federer's forehand was way off, while Berdych kept pounding serves and groundstrokes right where he wanted them. It was Berdych's fourth victory in his past seven meetings against Federer, including in the 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Federer had an unusually long break since his previous game. He hadn't competed since Saturday because Mardy Fish withdrew from their match on Monday because of a health scare.
